It was a memorable evening at Meydan on Thursday as Raven’s Corner won the $200,000 Group 3 Dubawi Stakes for Touch Gold & Sean Ewing.
After an eyecatching reappearance, Raven’s was in perfect shape for the big day and ran out an impressive 1 3/4 length winner from Drafted, with a long way back to the remainder.
Ridden by Richie Mullen once again, he was calm beforehand and once breaking well, found himself in the perfect spot just behind the leaders. He took it up turning for home and though got a little tired after chasing a very strong early pace, was always doing enough to hold off the fast-finishing runner-up.
It was a relief for all that Raven’s was finally able to show what many believed he could do at this level, having previously been hindered by slow starts or wide stalls on his 3 other runs in group company.
We’d like to take the time to thank all those at Zabeel, Satish, Bhupat, Caroline, Richie and Santi to name a few, along with many others for their tireless contributions towards having him in perfect shape when it mattered. His stalls issues have been well documented and it’s a real testament to what a superb operation they run at Zabeel that he was able to show his true colours on the big stage.
Now rated 109, he will stick to the sprint race schedule, and all being well he’ll be targeted towards another Group 3, the Al Shindagha at the very end of this month.
UPDATE: Very sadly Raven’s Corner suffered an injury whilst galloping at home in early February, an injury which he couldn’t recover from and he had to be put down. An unbelievably talented, spectacularly fast and magnificent racehorse, he is a huge loss to the syndicate and will be sorely missed by everyone.
Thank you to everyone at Zabeel Racing Stables, Sean Ewing and all of Raven’s Corner’s connections. We are left knowing his last race was his best, and his next would have been even better.
