It was a great night at Meydan for Touch Gold as Welford won the 1m handicap, getting the syndicate off the mark for the season in style.

After needing his first run at Jebel Ali 2 weeks’ ago, Welford looked primed for this spot and he duly delivered with an impressive success under Richie Mullen. Having settled just behind the leader on the rail, he travelled well throughout and picked up strongly to take it up over 1f out. Despite idling a bit in front, he bounded clear for hands-and-heels and looked value for even more than his 5 3/4 length margin of victory.

Welford was a 160,000aed purchase at the April 2017 Racing In Dubai sale and though has had some niggling issues which has only seen him race 4 times for Touch Gold, is very much set to reward the patience of connections now.┬áHe’s been raised 9lb, which puts him on a mark of 84 and another win would qualify him for Carnival races, with the rating band recently dropped to 90.

Many congratulations to all involved with him and a special thanks for Zabeel stables for have him in such great condition on the night. Hopefully this is just the start of a very exciting season for Welford.
